ABOUT ABOUT

Despite a rich history of creativity, innovation and agility, Leicester’s Fashion Industry, particularly the manufacturing sector has been faced with the challenge of achieving, maintaining and demonstrating an ‘ethical approach to fashion manufacturing’. The concerns which have been repeatedly raised in public media have not only adversely impacted Leicester’s reputation but also contributed to loss of revenue for the city’s businesses with orders being cancelled and contracts terminated. Earlier this year a petition for imposing an import ban for goods manufactured in Leicester was submitted to the US Customs and Border Patrol. Such developments contribute to worsening the ‘existential crisis’ for an industry that is already globally under scanner for its business practices and climate change related impacts. This session will convene representatives from academia, civil society, business and government to reflect on these issues and deliberate on specific actions the industry, specifically the manufacturing sector can take, particularly to avert the impending import ban. It will reflect on how a shift towards transparency can strengthen and enhance the credibility of the ‘Made in Leicester’ label.
